ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Bills needed to move quick and they did, naming Jim Schwartz the team's new defensive coordinator.

Schwartz had spent the last five years as the head coach in Detroit, but was let go after this season. Under his watch, the Lions made the playoffs in 2011, their appearance in the post season since 1999.

Schwartz also has nine years experience as a defensive coordinator in the NFL.

Schwartz takes over for Mike Pettine, who was named the head coach of the Browns Thursday.

The Bills also named Todd Downing as quarterbacks coach. He had the same role with the Lions last season.
