Gailey Still Focused on Winning

  • Text size: + -

An end to another tough season might be a gift for Bills fans this Christmas holiday. The team closes out its 13th straight campaign without making the playoffs Sunday against the Jets.

Monday head coach Chan Gailey was asked about the possibility of playing and evaluating reserves in the finale, including backup quarterbacks Tyler Thigpen and Tarvaris Jackson.

Gailey said Ryan Fitzpatrick and the rest of the starters will play, and winning is still the only goal despite the disappointing 5-10 record and a game that doesn't mean much other than draft position for next year.

"No, the best players are going to play. They’ve earned the right to play. They want to play in the games and that’s what they want to do. They want to play in the games, so they’ve earned the right to play. If they’re ready to go the best players are going to play.

"I try to win every game. I do not care what the situation is. I am trying to win every game. Who gives us the best chance to win? That is what I am about."

Defense has been one of the many issues leading to the Bills' underwhelming campaign.

Domination was supposed to the the "D" word that described this year's Bills' defense. Instead, disaster might be a better fit. And even though it has looked good in spurts, the overall picture is pretty ugly. If the Jets score 29 points in Sunday's finale, the Bills will break the record most points allowed in one season in franchise history.

It's been so bad under Chan Gailey, three of Bills worst four seasons for allowing points have come in his three years as head coach.

Over the past couple of weeks, the D has reverted back to its brutal form from early in the season.

"I really think we have played a little bit more tentative the last couple of weeks than we did there for a while," said Gailey. "I thought we were starting to hit our stride and make a lot of progress defensively and then we didn’t play as well two weeks ago and didn’t play as well yesterday."
