If you shop at the East Avenue Wegmans, this news is for you. Wegmans will close the store for about two months as it transitions into a new store.
For many city residents, it's a favorite shopping spot.
"I can find pretty much what I'm looking for every time, and sometimes the sales are unbelievable," said Adrian Demian.
But the East Avenue Wegmans is closing sometime in late February to make way for a transition to a new store, being built right next door to the existing one.
"Well, the transition wont be fun but I'm very excited about the new store," said Nina Walker.
The new East Avenue Wegmans will open May 19th. Longtime customers say the two months in between will be a bit of an inconvenience.
"A little, not bad. It will be worth it," Nina said.
"It's going to make my life difficult. I'm gonna miss it for those two months," Adrian said.
The new store will be 100,000 square feet. It's not as big as other stores the supermarket chain has built, but more than double the size of the existing one, which some customers call charming.
"I think it's good in the long run if it's a bigger store. Sometimes I go to Pittsford because this is too small," said Jennifer Ratcliff.
"Well, the nice thing is this one won't be huge. It will be medium sized," said Nina.
Signs have already been posted at the Wegmans pharmacy telling customers the store will be closing. But Wegmans does have a contingency plan. It will keep the pharmacy open while the store is closed, moving to a new location just across East Avenue, in leased space, next to a diner.
That temporary pharmacy will open immediately once the other store closes. Prescriptions can also be transferred to other Wegmans stores during those times.
Once it closes, East Ave Wegmans employees will be moved temporarily to other local stores.
An exact closing date hasn't been determined. It will likely happen the last week of February.
"It needed that expansion. Sometimes it feels really crowded. But on the other hand it feels like family. It's pretty small," Adrian said.
