More than thirty girls from sixteen area high schools participated in mock surgeries Saturday.

They worked with doctors and nurses at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The young women were chosen for the workshop from a pool of applicants.

The group will meet for six different lab session and will continue to work hands on with operating tools. Medical professionals in the program hope to serve as mentors.

"What attracted us to this kind of work when we were in our training was that we had a mentor who recognized that we might be interested in something like this," said Doctor Stephanie Siegrist. "[They] opened a door, got our hands on the tools, got us into the clinic, invited us into the operating room where we could see exactly how this type of work is done."

The goal of the program is to attract more women to the field of surgery.
